Kids & Crunches

posted in: Fit2B, homeschool, thoughts | 0

kids-crunchesI always so feel guilty doing something “just for me”. That chocolate bar sneaking into the cart hoping the kids don’t see. That half hour taken for a bath and good book. Quietly slipping out of the house to take a walk or go to the grocery store alone. Sticking in a DVD for the kids just so I can have a few minutes of quiet…..

I know, I know…. it’s important as moms to take care of ourselves, to take those moments we can to regroup and relax and to make our own health as important as our focus on our family, but it still brings that occasional feeling of guilt.

Of course, when I make health changes for myself, I often try to make them for the whole family when it is feasible. Over the last few years as I have learned about the importance of our core and how pregnancy often leaves some resulting core issues that need to be addressed and healed, I have been on this path to healing and strengthening my own core.  As I have educated myself and learned more and more in the fitness world I have realized like many areas of healthy living, things are ever changing. As we continue to learn about the body and its incredible design we learn new and better ways to treat, heal, support and strengthen the body. One of these areas is in the idea that sit ups and crunches will strengthen the core effectively and are safe for everyone. This just is not true.

6 Fitness Guidelines for Everyone

The Personal Trainers Guide to Diastasis

{Please do read through those links…. I am not going to reiterate what was explained so well by those experts above, but rather continue my thoughts based on my understanding of those articles!}

Now, I know most of those articles were aimed at the mom crowd and healing an existing diastasis or weak core but here’s my concern…..

It is said that “Form Follows Function”

If this is true, and I do think it is, then this concept that sit-ups and crunches are an effective way to strengthen a growing core and to build a strong core in our children as they grow needs to be addressed!

If doing crunches and sit-ups is not beneficial to me, {as a mom, who has had 8 pregnancies, carried 6 to term and vaginally delivered all of them and has since healed an 8+ wide diastasis after my youngest!} then are having my growing children doing sit-ups and crunches really beneficial for them? For my boys, they love to test each others strengths and be strong. You will often find them wrestling each other, racing in the yard, challenging each other – “look what I can do, can you do this?”. They are pretty typical boys 😉
And for my girls, while they may not roughhouse around like the boys, I still want them to be physically fit and to grow and strengthen their sweet bodies as they grow and I want them to go into their own childbearing years in a good and strong place, knowledgeable about their bodies and its capabilities.

And so, as they are getting older and exposed to more of the ‘mainstream fitness’, I struggle when I see them doing those crunch moves that are so common in children’s exercises. I have discussed this with my older boys and explained much of what I have expressed above. And thanks to the wonderful resources at Fit2B, (read this article and watch the video at the end), the boys and I have put together a few “better options” for them to do when others around do sit-ups and crunches. Ideally, they would rotate through a couple of these during those times and continue to strengthen their cores, just in a safer manner for their long term health and growth.

See, here’s the thing, doing a few crunches and sit-ups here and there as an 8 or 10 year old probably isn’t going to cause any long term damage or concern. However, continuing to do these in high quantities as they are older, into their young adult years, they could be setting themselves up for some concerning issues.

And so, we should be training them from the start to do exercises that will be beneficial long term, that will effectively strengthen their core and set them up for strong bodies and a healthy core down the road!

And so, here are the exercises, along with some examples…. forgive us that they are not always in perfect form…. they are still learning and working on it! But, I share this with you in hopes that you might be encouraged to research this topic and be comfortable with alternatives to the mainstream options and as we can teach others, one by one, we can strengthen those around us as well.

Planks – As explained in the photos, you can vary the height of your plank and challenge your strength and switch from on the front to the side and add in the various leg lift options

With planks, someone with a weak core would need to use caution, however, with my boys knowing they are at a point of growing and strengthening, I think this is a good option.

Mountain Climbers– this is one the boys like cause they can do them “so fast”, but if you are intentional about your alignment and actively engaging your core with each interchange, they will be more effective than just “running in place” 😉

Knee Wipers – these are also a nice way to stretch and get some good core work in at the same time. Again, actively engage the core and breathe well as you switch from side to side

Shoulder Bridge – this is one the boys have learned through wrestling, and while it may not be a good one for a damaged or weak core, as long as the core is engaged well during the entire bridge, I am ok with the boys doing this one, especially as it especially works the core well as you extend the leg.

So, I encourage you to consider this and perhaps encourage those kids in your life to be more intentional about strengthening their core with some alternatives to those “old fashioned” crunches and sit-ups. What are some other exercises that you could add to this list?

Do you ever feel overwhelmed by healthy living?

It’s not that you don’t understand or agree with why it matters. You’re sold on the merits of eating whole foods, raising healthier kids, avoiding toxins and chemicals, getting fit, and using alternative remedies.

But sometimes it’s a whole lot easier to say than to actually do, right? Believe me, I’ve had the same struggles and questions as you. What on earth do you eat (and especially, what do you feed your kids)? How do you afford to buy healthier products? And where do you find the time to make and do all this stuff?

I know what it’s like to feel that healthy living shouldn’t be this hard, and it shouldn’t have to cost so much, either! Don’t you ever wish someone would just tell you exactly what you need to know and how to make these changes for less?

Because when you have the right info and tools at your fingertips, it all comes together so much more easily.

You know what to cook for your family. You’re more confident in choosing natural alternatives. You find ways to save money without comprising on what’s important to you.

You learn to replace store-bought products with DIY options that actually work and are easy to make. You feel better (and even look better, too). Healthy living becomes less stressful and more enjoyable.

That’s why Stephanie and her team have put together the popular Ultimate Healthy Living Bundle for the fifth year in a row (hurray!). They’re amazed at how many families are saying “yes!” to their health (over 64,000 and counting!) and taking them up on this super short opportunity to get a complete library of natural living resources for one teeny tiny price.

You sort of need to see it to believe it, but the package includes 83 digital products and it’s worth over $2,400!

{uh yeah, seriously….. I was very impressed by the line-up of books in this bundle…. there are many gluten free and paleo resources as well as a brand new e-course from one of my favorite-ist people on earth, Beth from Fit2B!}

  • For the cost of a small bag of groceries, you’ll get a complete healthy living library to help you:
  • prepare whole & delicious real food
  • get the toxins out of your house for good
  • understand and use natural remedies
  • breathe new life into your exercise habits
  • learn about important women’s health issues
  • raise exceptionally healthy kids in an unhealthy world
  • plus learn about gardening & homesteading, meal planning, weight loss and so much more!

Plus, it comes with over $250 worth of bonus offers including:

1. Bloom Naturals – $15 gift certificate toward any product ($15 value)

Besides being so incredibly helpful and inspiring, one of the things I like best about the bundle is the price. By offering the bundle for a short time only, they’re able to give you access to over $2,400 worth of high-quality eBooks, eCourses and printables for a whopping 98% off!

Here’s how it works:

Get what you need for your healthy lifestyle. Learn more or get your bundle HERE.

(Psst… the bundle goes away at 11:59pm Eastern on Monday, September 26th, so don’t wait!)

loving others- by loving yourself….do it today! {limited time offer!}

Loving others by loving yourself

So, it’s early February now. Please tell me I am not the only one who started the new year fully intending to be more faithful at exercising and loose those “last 10 pounds before summer”.  But with all good intentions, life comes in and makes it hard. Exercising has always been a challenge for me. Honestly, as a wife to a hard working-and many hours working- man and a mama to many little ones, close together & homeschooling, making time to take care of myself is hard too. I love the little meme that’s running around the internet lately that goes something like: “my hobbies? I’m a mom, I enjoy trips to the bathroom alone and silence”! It’s true. As mom and the one the responsible for the home, the meals, the kids, the schooling…… somewhere along the line, we often forget ourselves.

And while I thoroughly understand and learn over and over again, marriage and motherhood are very much serving roles. We serve those we love, we serve, often thanklessly, day-in and day-out and we find joy in the little things, cherish each moment, we love being home with our babies and being able to school our children and love our husbands with our whole hearts. We know in our hearts that we are where we are called to be and find joy in that, in each day and in the journey. But, there is another side to the coin. 😉

If we are not faithful to take care of our own bodies, to keep in good health, to heal what is broken and to strengthen where we are weak, we will not be able to have the impact and ability to serve our family, to participate fully in their lives, to be able to be the wife and mother we desire to be.

And so, as I contemplate this, I am reminded once again that finding things that make me happy, making time in my days to relax and chill and yes, being intentional about exercising and strengthening my body is something that needs to be a priority.

If you’ve been around here for anytime, I know you have heard me talk about Fit2B and the workout program they offer. An online workout format, well over 100 different workouts ranging for very simple and easy to complex and intense. Stretching, core work, yoga, aerobics, kettle-bells, step….. the list goes on and on, there are workouts for new moms, pregnant moms, kids, those new to exercise and those who need an intense high cardio workout. Everything is done in your own home via internet – Beth is careful to provide a safe environment for a family space, modestly attired and no iffy language, just a good workout, for you – at your level, what you need for that day, something your kids can participate in as well. Her voice is so soothing and relaxing, her words full of encouragement and knowledge. I have learned more about my body and how it works from her and her team, it’s wonderful!

I know for me, being able to ‘join a gym’ is just not realistic both financially as well as the small town living we love. And as mom to 6 kids, going out to a gym won’t happen either – it’s either too early, too late, too dark or too many kids to find childcare for, let alone finding an “gym-worthy” outfit- not happenin’!

Fit2B newSo, being able to have something I can access 24/7 when it works into my daily routine – for me to able to choose if I need an upbeat cardio routine or if I need a simple stretching one or if it’s that time of the month and the incredible pms routine is more needed- it’s all right there.

I love the heart Beth and her team have in ministering to women in all walks of life and in each season, to meet them where they are, to provide healing and strengthening to each one. I always come away from my workouts feeling encouraged and as if I just spent 20 or 30 minutes working out and chatting with a friend.

Fit2B just released their brand-new mobile app in the last month. It’s been fun to play with, a good kick in the pants to go ahead and just take that 20 minutes and do a routine when the text message comes in. To be able to have goals and accountability and the ease of access from any mobile device is so helpful.

In the last 5 years, Fit2B has been able to grow incredibly and offer more and more content and workouts for an incredibly low monthly/yearly cost. They are getting ready to implement a small membership price increase BUT before they do, they are offering a free 5 day pass to the mobile app and ability to “try it before you buy”. All current members will lock in their membership prices at their current levels and that will not increase.  If you are a monthly member, this is a great time to perhaps upgrade to the yearly membership {and when combine the savings in a yearly with my coupon code on the resource page HERE…. it’s ‘almost’ 6 months free!, pretty awesome deal!} If you have been thinking about a membership, this is a great opportunity to try it out and perhaps be a monthly member and lock in the old price before it goes up!

Click here or the graphic below to get all the details and information on how to access the free trial TODAY. Again, this is a limited time offer, prices go up on February 12, 2016.

This is a great way to help yourself take care of you so you can better serve your family today and in the years to come.

Have you heard of Fit2B before this post? What is your favorite way to get some exercise in your day?

FIT2B-1

And the word of the week is…. Maintain

posted in: ESV Bible, Fit2B, gracewords, thoughts | 2

just maintain.....

As I thought about this last week and assessed how it went, what I got accomplished and just overall how the week flowed the word that came to me was “maintain” – I feel like I spent much of the week just staying at the ‘maintain life’ level. Picking up the playroom, doing laundry, straightening the living room, doing dishes, feeding the masses – repeat every 3 hours 😉  Due to some schedule and weather interventions, my major grocery shopping ‘in the city’ didn’t happen this month, so as we get toward the end of the month it becomes a little more of a creative menu from the pantry game. Not that we are starving or anything, I just find myself not having some of my more normal pantry items around and am working on using the odds and ends items up that really need used anyhow. My husbands work schedule has been a little sporadic and he’s been around more which also kinda messes with my routine too.

While it might have been just a ‘maintain’ week, it was good too. We were able to sleep in more than usual and have a more relaxed week, we got school done and my older boys impressed me with some good math pages, we reviewed our last section of history and moved forward there. My little ones have been into coloring and drawing lately and I have some fun horse drawings by my 5 year old and princess and dolphin and horse drawings by the girls. All in all, it was a good week. And I am looking forward to next week and seeing what it brings!

One thing I am hoping improve on this week is doing a couple of the new workouts on the Fit2B site. There is a new walking one and a new “bag-a-better….” routine, both of which I am wanting to do. It’s always a challenge for me to find time for me to exercise but I do feel better when I do, so I need to work on making it more a priority in my days. And just a quick note, prices on Fit2B are going up February 1st…. if you have been thinking about joining for either a monthly or yearly option, NOW is the time to do it. You will lock in your membership at the “old” prices and be able to continue to renew monthly or yearly at those prices. The increase will not be huge, but minimal, especially as they now have a mobile app option with links to challenges and weekly reminders and courses included in the membership as well as all great workouts on the main site! {Don’t forget to go over to my resource page for a special coupon code for the yearly membership!}

I was reminded that it is good to just rest and relax in the peace of God, to just bask in grace and stand firm. To know that the off weeks, the weeks that we don’t know what we actually accomplished, we know that God is at work in our lives, strengthening and establishing and we can take joy in that truth.

Moringa Mama

It’s all around us – everywhere we look – your body needs this or that, your struggle with this would be helped with that, the pain you have there is relieved by this, have more energy, sleep better, increase your stamina, loose the pounds, gain time today, relieve your stress, laugh often, play hard, sleep when baby sleeps, clean the house effectively, enjoy the mess, conquer the laundry and master the meals….. cherish the moments…. that’s what we really want, right?

We want to be able to BE THERE, to be able to function and smile and enjoy those little smiles and sticky hands. To sit on floor and play, to ride bikes, take a hike or just jump in the lake. We want to cherish the moments we have been given today.

Today is a gift – yesterday is gone and tomorrow may never come – it’s what we do today that matters.

This moment
This moment

As a mama to little ones, homeschooling ones, many years of (what seemed like constant!) pregnancy and nursing under my belt – and the fluff and padding still under that belt 😉 – I desire to keep my body in the best shape I can. Oh, I don’t obsess over it; I’m too busy reading books and making the next meal and keeping the toddlers playing nice together to do that. But I do want to increase my energy, lose a few pounds, be able to walk or run or hike in the years to come. I want to give my body good, real and nourishing foods in order to stay healthy and so it heals from the fatigue and drain of multiple pregnancies. I have so appreciated the ministry and education I have received from Fit2B, letting me know that I am not broken and my body can heal and how to do that and how to strengthen my core to be able to support well the rest of my body.

As I look at information and read about what the body needs to be at it’s optimum function, I often come away discouraged. It’s hard to know if I need more of this vitamin or this mineral or that nutrient or this supplement.  Eating real and unprocessed food is good. An excellent plan and one that I follow the best I can, but it’s also discouraging as you read study after study and articles all over that show that food is just not the same any more, the nutrients we need are getting hard to get even in real and unprocessed foods.

Nutritional deficiency in our food supply in the United States has become an increasing problem over the last few decades. This is a problem for our health and vitality! A study of changes in food composition for 13 nutrients in 43 garden crops from 1950 to 1999 found the following:
A 38% decline in riboflavin A 20% decline in vitamin C A 16% decline in calcium A 15% decline in iron A 9% decline in phosphorus A 6% decline in protein (source)

Gram for gram, Moringa has more vitamins and nutrients that any other plant in the world.

HEALTH BENEFITS OF MORINGA – Delivers anti-inflammatory support; Promotes healthy digestion; Heightens mental clarity; Increases energy; Provides natural anti-aging benefits; Nourishes body’s immune system; Maintains blood glucose levels; Promotes healthy circulation. (source)

I have started taking the Moringa from Zija. It’s a powdered little powerhouse packet of moringa mix that I add to water and drink. I try to take it first thing in the morning since it can have a good metabolic effect that will aid in weight loss by getting it into your system first thing in the morning. But if I forget, I typically will take mid morning/before lunch. I find the drink mix fairly palatable and don’t mind drinking down my 20 ounce water bottle full of it, but you can certainly mix in less water and get it down quicker too.

There are 3 options for the primary moringa supplement – the Super Mix, the Smart Mix and the XM + – it is suggested that you start with the Super Mix – this has the highest moringa content of the 3. The Smart Mix has a slightly lower moringa content but has an added prebiotic in the mix, an excellent combination, but depending on your existing gut issues, it can occasionally cause a little upset tummy till your body gets more balanced. The XM+ adds some oomph to the moringa by adding in a natural caffeine to give yourself a little boost. I have personally taken all 3 and ideally would like to alternate between the Smart and Super Mix on a regular basis with having a little of the XM+ on hand to use on days when I know the added energy will be needed!

As I have learned more about the Moringa, I have found it to be quite fascinating and truly a ‘super food’. I have found other sources of it as well, but the more I learn about Zija as a company and their superior processing of the entire moringa tree and utilizing it in the best form possible, I am becoming more and more convinced this is a excellent source for a true real food multi-vitamin that will benefit your body well.

I have found over the last couple months, I seem to have a more steady and reliable level of stamina….I wouldn’t say I am bursting with energy all day, but my energy level day to day and week to week are more stable. I am also craving less coffee in the morning….something that is encouraging since I know too much coffee isn’t great for adrenal issues (which I know I am struggling with), so being satisfied in the morning with one cup and perhaps a bit of a second one is wonderful after needing 2-3 cups in the morning and often coming back for more thru the day. I also know that my adrenal issues are not something that have developed ‘overnight’ and the years of drain and stress on them will take some time to resolve. This is true of overall health as well, it isn’t built in 2 weeks or a month of clean eating or a new supplement. It’s built over time as you feed your body well, treat your body well and exercise it in the best way for your body as well as giving it the nutrients it needs to build, rebuild and strengthen your body, both internally and externally.

the moringa plant
SO, have I piqued your interest in this whole Moringa plant? Watch the video below for some more information, it’s about 17 minutes and has some excellent information.

Plus, I am planning on sharing regularly about Moringa and it’s benefits – you can follow me on Facebook or sign up for emailed versions of my posts via the box over in the side column!

Another reason I want to share Zija with you goes beyond the Moringa products, they also have the Ripstick products, great for before/during/after workouts as well as a drink for anytime (similar to other sports drinks but without all the nasty additives, chemicals and colors!) and a complete weight management system as well. Zija also has an emerging and growing essential oil line called Ameo as well. The more I am learning about the Ameo oils I am thrilled with their process, purity and potential. If you enjoy essential oils, this is a wonderful line to look at and I will share more about it in the future as well – it needs it own post!

Finally, I want to quickly share my dreams for the business and growing side of the Zija products. I am a distributor for the full line of products, you can purchase through me with ‘no strings attached’, ordering just a one time order or a monthly auto ship with the ability to cancel or change at anytime. You can also purchase starter kits with a variety of products to get yourself started with products and the potential for your own business.

As I was introduced to Zija, I saw not only a great product – one that would nourish and support my body and my family’s health as well, but I also saw potential for business growth. As you might know, my husband is self employed in the construction/contractor field and has established himself well with a firm foundation of excellence and quality work. But with the ups and downs of any field, the construction field is a challenging one. We often discuss ways we can expand our business, grow our dreams and be able to establish a heritage and business legacy to pass on to our children. Even as I type this, my older boys are helping their dad today at work, cleaning and picking up and coming along side him and learning the value of work. As a family, we have big dreams. We would love to own a little piece of land and build our home on it. Together and with those around us, we desire to establish a home and haven for our family and friends. A place to call our own to serve our God, our family, our community – a place we can pass on to our children and their children. To raise up a generation of established, well rounded educationally, strong men and women. Right now, I know my primary field of work is my home and children, being the wife my husband needs, the mother and teacher my children need, caring and tending to the home as a whole. But I also desire to grow our family business, to be able to possibly bring in a some additional income to start building our dreams and to possibly in some way relieve some of that constant financial pressure so many of us struggle with on a regular basis.

My prayer and desire is not some ‘get rich quick scheme’, it’s a desire to offer a product and source for good nutrition and health; To pass the opportunity on to anyone that might be interested and to help support my family in the process. I welcome your input, your feedback, your questions and your support. Zija has a wonderful team to come along side and work with and I would love to share the vision with you.

As I wrap up this post I would encourage you to watch the video below (it’s 11 minutes!) and learn more about Zija. I would love to answer any questions you may have and when you are ready, I can help you get this product on its way to you. I encourage you to click through the many links I have in the post and write down any of your questions, concerns or thoughts about the product and let’s set up a time to talk either via email (jen@claffs.com) or phone and if I don’t have the answer I know people that do and we can connect with them together!

{And if you received this post as information on Zija from a friend of yours that is also a Zija distributor, please connect with them for more information and ordering…. not that I wouldn’t love to help you as well, but I do want to respect the referral process as we all work together on sharing and educating our friends on this information!}

Taking Care of Me

Self 6

I lay in bed this morning, it was still early, my body woke me up on autopilot since our normal rising time is around 5 am. But today is Saturday and my mind starts rolling through my ‘to-do’ list and what I ought to get up and start doing, but instead I force myself to slow down, turn down the thoughts and go back to sleep. Am I being a ‘lazy’ wife by not following my husband out of bed and get moving on our day? NO! Not today – there is a place where I do need to get up and get going – but today, knowing the day, knowing our schedule, I knew taking care of me and giving myself an extra couple hours of sleep was the best thing I could do for my husband {and children}. Because I love him, I am choosing to take care of me so I can better serve and care for him.
